Hydrogeologist

A Hydrogeologist studies the distribution, movement, and quality of groundwater beneath the Earth's surface. They assess aquifer systems, analyze water samples, and develop models to predict groundwater behavior. Working for government agencies, environmental consulting firms, or research institutions, they help manage water resources, investigate contamination, and support sustainable development. Their expertise is critical for water supply planning, environmental remediation, and climate resilience projects.

GIS Techniques Applied to Hydrogeology Course

You will learn to collect, manage, and analyze spatial hydrogeologic data using industry-standard GIS tools and workflows. The course covers digital elevation model processing, geologic mapping, potentiometric surface interpolation, and aquifer vulnerability assessment. You will integrate water-quality and geochemical data into GIS to map contamination plumes and hydrogeochemical facies. Advanced topics include connecting GIS workflows to numerical groundwater flow models, applying geostatistical methods, and automating repetitive tasks with Python scripting. By the end, you will produce professional hydrogeologic maps, geodatabases, and technical reports ready for regulatory and management use.

What does a Hydrogeologist do

  • Conduct field investigations including drilling, well installation, and aquifer pump tests to characterise groundwater systems and assess water availability.

  • Develop and calibrate numerical groundwater flow and contaminant transport models using software such as MODFLOW to predict subsurface water behaviour.

  • Collect and analyse water samples to evaluate chemical and biological quality, identify contamination sources, and recommend remediation strategies.

  • Prepare technical reports, environmental assessments, and regulatory compliance documents for clients, government agencies, and stakeholders.
